Universities, colleges and schools allow the staffs and students to access internet by using campus’s network. But this access is limited to those websites with academic and research interest only. Many of the entertainment websites and social networking websites are usually blocked by the educational institutions as they are the main distraction of student’s attention. Method 1: Using IP addresses

Usually we access the websites by typing their URL which is also known as “web link.” and network administrators try to block the websites by the URLs like www.facebook.com or www.myspace.com etc. When a user tries to access these sites by typing the URL would immediately get blocked message.

If this is the blocking method used by the network then the bypass method is to use the IP address of the website. For this the system needs to be run on Cmd mode. Following are the steps used for this:

Go to the Start button and type ‘cmd’ in the search box.
Command prompt window opens up.
Type ‘ping [website name]’ and press enter.
It would show the IP address of the desired website.
Type the IP address in the browser and the website gets opened up.

Method 2: Using Proxy Servers

In this method browser settings would be altered to gain access to a blocked website. How it would be done is explained here:

Proxy settings can be found in the advanced settings of the browser.
In IE it could be found in Tools>Internet Options>Connections>Settings>Use a proxy server for this connection.
In Google Chrome Proxy settings can be access through Settings>Advanced Settings>Show Advanced Settings>Network>Change proxy settings.
Click on ‘Change proxy settings’ and check the box that is next to ‘Use a proxy server for your LAN.’
Now type the desired website name (for e.g. facebook.com) in the dialogue box that is next to ‘Address’.
Press OK button and now the desired website should be available for browsing.

Method 3: Using Google Cache

As part of its web crawling, Google search engine creates cache pages i.e. the snapshots of the websites with all their style, form and content in place. This cache is created randomly but on a progressive date and time stamps. These cache details can be used to easily bypass the network blocking and proceed to browse the website of the choice.

To do this the steps mentioned under Method 2 can be followed with a small change of adding a port. After entering the name of the website in ‘Address’ box add ‘80’ in the port box. This takes the user to see the proxy sites.

Method 4: Using WayBack Machine

Wayback Machine is an online database that stores the websites and their contents on a particular date stamp. It maintains the calendar view in which by clicking on a particular date of a month, users can see how the site was looking on that date and what was published until then on the website. By using this database, anyone can gain access to the desired website as the URL of the website will not be shown in the browser but the URL of Wayback Machine appears.
