Chinese App Snack Video crosses 100 Mn download on Google Play Store

Chinese short video sharing app Snack Video has now crossed 100 Mn download mark on Google play store, virtually becoming the no 1 short video sharing app of India. This despite all the hype around the made in India apps that are today trying very hard to capture the Indian market by riding high on the atam nirbhar bharat campaign.

Few weeks back Snack Video’s download numbers on play store were hovering around 50 Mn – 70 Mn and the app has managed to cross the 100 Mn mark within the span of two weeks since then. The continuously growing download numbers is a clear indication of app’s growing popularity among Indian consumers. More importantly, it now seems to be in the pole position to replace the numero uno position of TikTok app, which was banned in June due to the growing Indo-China tension.

As for the Indian apps, ShareChat’s Moj, InMobi’s Roposo and Times Internet’s Max Taka Tak may have a semblance of chance in challenging the domination of Snack Video. Moj and Roposo can especially muster a challenge for the Chinese app, with both apps boosting more than 50 Mn downloads on the play store. However, unlike Snack Video, both apps apparently have been unable to add up to their download numbers over the last few weeks.

Chinagri and Mitron apps, on other hand, still have a long way to go to close the gap on Snack Video. Both these apps have just managed to clock 10 Mn – 20 Mn download on the play store so far. But given that both these apps have managed to recently raise funds, post-funding they maybe probably in a better position to compete with Snack video or even Moj and Taka Tak.

Snack video is owned by a Chinese company called Kuaishou Technology. Although a relatively unknown company in India, Kuaishou has a global presence across the world. It operates many entrainment apps, with Kwai app being one of its flagship apps. Many of its other apps have gained huge popularity, topping the Google Play and Apple App Store’s “Most Downloaded” lists in as many as eight countries.

Interestingly, Kuaishou’s Kwai app was one of the 58 Chinese apps that got banned by Indian government in June. Curiously enough, it was exactly during June that the Snack Video app was launched in India.
