One of the most common Twitter spam is through tweet. Someone whom you follow shall tweet a malicious link, advertising for hair fall solutions programs or scandalous/ controversial pictures. Occasionally, you will be followed by a spam account and you may get tagged with a spam. So the most intelligent thing to do in such cases are not to click or open the link unless you are 100 percent sure. If you are even 1 percent suspicious, do not open it, even if it is from a person you trust.
Spams usually arrive in your Twitter inbox in the form direct messages, likely from someone you know or a follower, with a link and a short message. The message will have something with sharing information or photos.
Given below are some steps to remove spam from your twitter account if you think it has been compromised.
1. Change Your Password.
This is the easiest and the fastest way to thwart the spam off your Twitter account. Change the password of your account. Make sure it’s complicated and random, with capital letters, symbols and numbers, when you select a new password. The harder it will be for somebody to crack or guess your password if the weirder you make it. And also keep changing it once every year.
2. Make sure to Alert Your Followers.
Alert your followers that know know about a spam problem that is out there and you are taking steps to avoid or fix it. Advise them like you are advised, not to click or open the link unless they are 100 percent sure. If they are even 1 percent suspicious, not to open it, even if it is from a person they trust. Tell them to ignore if they receive suspicious links.
3. Revoke Application Access.
The person who accessed your account may use a Twitter app for spamming. Thankfully, Twitter does have a solution in this case. Go to your settings button (that looks like a gear at the top-right corner of your page), then go for ‘Apps’. From there, revoke access to third party application or device, so that the hacker cannot use that app anymore while you still tweet.
4. Delete Messages/Tweets.
Go back and delete all the spam tweets. As it will run a risk that someone accidentally may click it again, even if you have warned him or her beforehand. So it is always better to leave no trace of it.
You can take other additional steps also, for e.g.: getting your whole laptop or desktop scanned for viruses and then deleting all your caches and cookies. Hackers attain to your Twitter password via these caches and cookies. Plus if it detects any malware or virus, you should immediately change your passwords to your other email accounts, social media accounts and online banking.
