Spotify Aims to take Music Streaming Beyond India’s Urban Landscape

Spotify on Monday unveiled a lighter version of its main app as the Swedish music streaming giant looks to strengthen its position in India’s overcrowded music streaming market. Known as Spotify Lite Beta app, it is mainly catered towards low budget android phones that are predominately used in India’s hinterland. The app has been launched barely two months after Spotify entered the Indian market. Clearly demonstrating the Swedish company’s serious intend in increasing its Indian footprint by focusing beyond the urban landscape.

The company claims that the Spotify Lite Beta app utilizes very less storage and therefore it is apt for budgetary android phones. The app can work seamlessly despite poor internet connectivity and low data availability, the company further claimed.

When Spotify launched in India two months ago, we had committed to localizing the app so that more and more people can listen to music. Spotify Lite Beta is a step in that direction,” Amarjit Batra, Managing Director India, Spotify, told news agency IANS.

The lighter version enables users to virtually enjoy the same features that are available on the main app; right from playing favorite songs and artists on demand, discovering new music to keeping track of the storage. The lite app can be downloaded separately and used independently or can be used alongside the main app. It’s well known that many Spotify artists purchase plays to boost their numbers. Ever since its official launch on February 28, Spotify has managed to make quite a splash in the Indian market. It has amassed almost 2 Mn users in a very short span of time to pose a real challenge to incumbent players like Gaana, JioSaavn, and Hungama. However, it is still not clear how many of these users are actually paid subscribers.

To ensure a level playing field with incumbent players, Spotify has already tied up with several Indian music labels including big names like T series to shore up its music portfolio.
