Zerodha’s CEO Nithin Kamat took all his well-wishers by surprise on Tuesday when he tweeted that his wife, Seema, was detected with Breast Cancer in November last year. However, Kamat’s tweet was less about breaking this important news but more about sharing his wife’s emotional and roller coaster journey against Breast Cancer.
Kamat probably could not have broken this important news on a more appropriate day than on 8th March, a day that is officially celebrated as Women’s Day across the world. The Zerodha CEO has also changed his profile pic on Twitter where he is clearly seen carrying a bald head and standing besides his wife. This bold gesture was obviously meant to lend an emotional support to his cancer infested wife.
Kamat tweeted “Seema, my wife, was diagnosed with breast cancer last Nov. She decided to share her journey & learnings till now to create awareness on cancer & the importance of regular health checkups, health insurance & overall health & well-being.
Happy Women’s Day.”
Kamat tweeted this along with a link to the blog (seema.page) where Seema has chronicled her ongoing fight against cancer in great detail.
Seema’s blog is titled ‘I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer!.’ The title apparently suggests that being a health conscious person is so no guarantee that the person won’t be diagnosed with cancer.
Seema writes in her blog that until a week she hadn’t spoken about her cancer with anyone apart from her immediate family and friends. However, she further writes that keeping stoic silence would only help in perpetuating the social taboo against cancer. To break this taboo, she decided to pen her cancer journey through her blog.
She claims that a lump in her breast turned out to be cancerous and regretted not having got checked with a doctor few years ago.
Seema recounted that she went through couple of shock moments during her cancer treatment. These shock moments included mastectomy treatment immediately after surgery, the second being her hair loss due to chemotherapy and third being the fact that she had to be fitted with pipes post-surgery. Notably, these armpits were near her armpits and breasts to collect her waste fluids.
Recounting her chemotherapy experience, she said that the pain was very minimal during the first two days but the pain got her very hard during the reaming 4-5 days. “It felt like being run over by a truck for the next 5 to 7 days. Weakness, joint pain, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, no sense of taste, and more. But thankfully it ended within 7 days,” she writes in her blog.
In her blog, Seema stressed the importance of having a good health insurance policy and regular health check-ups.
Seema also mentioned in her blog that she and her husband have refused to wear a wig to hide their baldness and thereby consolidate their fight against Cancer and the social taboo against the diseases.
